Beckwith Memorial Building

Opened in 1893, the Beckwith Memorial Building was built to honor Round Oak Stove Company founder Philo D. Beckwith. Featuring a Romanesque facade with busts of famous artists, composers, philosophers and authors, the building housed a grand theater described as the finest between Chicago and Detroit. The Beckwith Theater hosted opera, live theater and vaudeville and transitioned into a movie theater before the structure was torn down in 1966.
