As Dowagiac prepared to open its new Central School building in 1926, current students and alumni raised funds for a new athletics field and a fitting gated entry. James Heddon made the largest contribution and William Hoyt of the Dowagiac Drill Company spearheaded the fundraising for the gate. The most decorated athlete in Dowagiac history is wrestler Chris Taylor (Class of 1968). He won state titles in High School, national titles in college and went on to win the Bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics. Dowagiac schools added his name to make it Chris Taylor Alumni Field in September of 1983.
